About Tabeisa Design4life Ghana

Tabeisa is a not for profit organisation, which works to support local entrepreneurs and business enterprise in disadvantaged communities, particularly in Africa.

The EFF worked with Tabeisa to design, manage, and launch a fashion competition which would bring together design and market expertise with a fair trade organisation, Women in Progress, in Ghana. The EFF organised retail, designer, and press support for the project and launched the competition to a network of thousands of designers, fashion industry professionals, fashion colleges, students and graduates in June 2006.

Design teams from both the UK and Ghana prepared dress designs and batik textile designs in line with the production processes, capacities, and opportunities available at Women in Progress.

Competition entries were judged by a distinguished panel of judges including buyers from Stella McCartney and Topshop, former curator of the V&A and chairperson of the Batik Guild. The designs of 3 runners up were made up into samples with the advice and support of technical experts- these were then show cased on the catwalk in Paris in October. Topshop was established as a buyer for the winning designs which were sold through their flagship store in Oxford Street.
When the collection sold out within four days, a larger re-order was made from Women in Progress in Ghana. As a result of this, wages for the women’s co-operative workers were raised from as little as $1 a day to $11-12 per day.

Further to the success of Design4life Ghana, the EFC was appointed to deliver workshops and training to a network of designers and entrepreneurs in South Africa around issues of international market access, product development, and socially and environmentally sustainable business practices.

The goal of this project was to increase capacity and market access for these businesses and develop a sustainable structure for ongoing training run by local representatives.
