Profile

Fairtrade is a global organisation working to secure a better deal and improved terms of trade for cotton farmers in the developing world, empowering them to improve their lives and plan for a better future.

Fairtrade Australia & New Zealand is a full and active member of Fairtrade International and has the sole right to license the use of the FAIRTRADE Mark in Australia and New Zealand. For a product to display the FAIRTRADE Mark it must meet the social, economic and environmental standards set by Fairtrade International.

Fairtrade continues to develop new ways for producers to sell more on Fairtrade terms. The new Fairtrade Sourcing Program which allows companies to Fairtrade cotton for use throughout their supply chain will open up new sales opportunities for farmers.

Fairtrade International has been working to extend its approach to the entire textile value chain by developing the textile standard. The standard includes requirements relating to unionization and freedom of association, workers’ health and safety, and environmental regulations. The Fairtrade approach goes beyond certification and monitoring to offer support and training to the producers helping them work towards living wages.

Ethical Focus & Policy

Fairtrade is a global movement which supports cotton farmers, often the forgotten link in the cotton supply chain, to gain improved terms of trade and fair prices for their cotton crops, enabling them to earn a more stable income and take more control of their lives and communities.

Fairtrade benefits more than 1.5 million farmers and workers in 75 countries and works with 1210 producer organisations worldwide. These farmers are committed to reducing chemical use and protecting the environment.

The Fairtrade Minimum Price and Premium, development of long-term trading relationships, and access to credit are enabling farmers to negotiate better trade terms, attract investment and strengthen their collective voice, as well as invest in their communities to improve their lives and plan for a better future.
