Meticulously crafted British Alpaca knitwear
Ally Bee enters its third winter season in Autumn Winter 2016 with an evolving range of British alpaca knitwear for women. The collection is crafted from high quality bespoke British alpaca and British wool yarns, and contain no oil-based polyamide or acrylics. Each piece is crafted in a small factory in the Scottish Borders in British alpaca and select varieties of British wool yarns.
The collection is designed in contemporary styles with timeless appeal for longevity and wearability, in a selection of women’s scarves, gloves and hats and a fully-fashioned Fisherman’s rib crew neck sweater. Ally Bee is designed in London, and all pieces are crafted in a long-established small factory in the Scottish Borders.
The AW16 collection is a continuation & expansion on the best-selling designs in the past two years, and offers an alternative to fast turnaround, ‘in today, out tomorrow’cashmere collections.
Ally Bee supports British small business along the entire supply chain. This begins with British alpaca smallholdings in the south of England. Although alpacas are not native to Britain, they are a remarkably low impact animal flourishing on British pasture and successful breeding programmes. They consume less than sheep, and are ruminant feeders meaning they do not disrupt the grass roots unlike other grazing stock.
Ethical Focus & Policy
The ethos of Ally Bee is underpinned by environmental sustainability and high standards of British production. Ally Bee alpaca yarns are spun from the fleece of alpacas reared on British smallholdings where the animals are treated with great respect and are grazed non-intensively.
Alpaca yarns are ‘coloured by nature’ using blends of natural shades without the use of dyes, heavy detergents and excessive water. The alpaca yarns spun for Ally Bee are soft and robust, with a cashmere-like softness but without cashmere’s often weighty environmental price-tag.
Wool makes up a small proportion of Ally Bee yarns and is sourced from British breeds, all of which are mulesing-free. Apart from the import of small quantities of Falklands Merino fleece, there is zero-airmiles in the production of the Ally Bee collection.
The finished product is meticulously crafted in a small factory supporting skilled high quality production using ‘old-school’ techniques of hand-frame knitting. Sweaters are fully fashioned, thereby eliminating the high yarn wastage associated with ‘cut & sew’ methods.
Ally Bee offers an alternative to mass-produced knitwear, with a story in the British landscape and appeals to customers who buy with a critical eye for sustainability and quality and seek a supply chain that is traceable and transparent.
