Handcrafted jewellery from the Himalayas.
Kaligarh was established in late 2013 by Jyoti Upadhyay. The business creates handcrafted jewellery, working with silver, brass and goldplated metal for Boutique shops and curated online portals focused on high-quality, artisanal products.
Each element of their jewellery is produced in-house, including chains and clasps. Alongside their own product line they also manufacture for other brands and are open to collaborations.
Kaligarh means artisan in Nepali, and its mission is to create opportunities for craftsmen and women in the Himalayan region. Its founder, Jyoti Upadhyay, is passionate about addressing the massive social issue of labour migration, by which hundreds of thousands of men and women in Nepal risk their lives to pursue unskilled work in the Middle East (e.g. to build the World Cup 2022 venues in Qatar), often working under treacherous conditions with very little protection – all due to a lack of opportunities at home.
Kaligarh’s work in promoting and reviving ancient crafts has been recognised by high-end magazines such as Departures, Vogue India and Conde Nast Traveller.
Kaligarh’s target customers are lifestyle and fashion boutiques, and curated online portals. Their latest collection of contemporary silver jewellery is now available for order. Please contact [email protected] to request the catalogues.

Ethical Focus & Policy
Kaligarh’s mission is to create opportunities for craftsmen and women in the Himalayan region.
Each of Kaligarh’s eight artisans were affected by the earthquake that struck Nepal in April 2015. Following this devastating event, the company was active in supporting its craftsmen to rebuild their lives. Kaligarh is dedicated to continuing this support in the long term, through providing good incomes and dignified work for traditional artisans.
The artisan is at the centre of the organisation’s culture. Each artisan works in their home environment or from individual studios. These are spaces in which they feel comfortable, and this independence gives them a sense of dignity. Kaligarh works with the artisans on a one-to-one basis, helping them to retain a positive sense of identity.
Traditionally, artisans in the region support a large extended family: their spouse, children, parents and often siblings and their families as well. Medical expenses are sudden and a heavy burden for the main caretaker of the family. On such occasions, the company provides advances and loans, as well as a flexible work schedule. It also provides grants for emergency situations.
All products are handmade. The only machinery used is to polish a finished piece of jewellery or to gold-plate. They use handmade locally sourced and locally produced materials for all their packaging – paper produced from the bark of the lokta plant, woollen felt and handwoven nettle fibre.
Kaligarh is recognised as a Fair Trade Supplier by the British Association of Fair Trade Shops and Suppliers (BAFTS).
