Improving cotton production for farmers, environment and the sector’s future.

Profile

The Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) exists to make global cotton production better for the people who produce it, better for the environment it grows in and better for the sector’s future. It is a global approach that provides a solution for the mainstream cotton industry, including both smallholders and large scale farmers. Benefits are delivered to the poorest and most exposed actors in the global supply chain, and at the same time, large producers are helped to develop solutions that enable large scale provision of a new mainstream commodity, Better Cotton.

Members include actors from all parts of the supply chain as well as civil society organisations. BCI’s approach is to work with partners to enable the supply of Better Cotton and stimulate marketplace demand. Success is measured by both the positive change created at the field level and the use of Better Cotton on a global scale. To make the Better Cotton marketplace functio effectively, and enable Better Cotton to become a mainstream commodity traded through regular channels, BCI coordinates and promotes the Better Cotton System.

Ethical Focus & Policy

BCI brings together producers, ginners, mills, traders, manufacturers, retailers, brands and civil society organisations in a unique global partnership to transform cotton production and to secure the future of the sector. BCI aims to create long-term change in and around cotton fields all over the world by helping farmers to grow cotton in a way that reduces stress on the local environment and improves the livelihoods and welfare of farming communities.
