Ethical Focus & Policy

Working with an innovative natural dye research project in India, Botanica Tinctoria materials are made from locally milled, GOTS certified organic cotton and organic Eri silk, and dyed with natural dyes in a closed loop system.

BioDye uses dyes, mordants and auxiliaries that are environmentally safe. Dyestuffs are obtained from sustainable sources such as leaves, fruits, by-products and regenerative stems, and all waste materials are biodegradable. Waste products, including compost and irrigation-quality water, are used to grow dye and medicinal plants and food crops for in-house consumption.

Local women’s groups assist in the gathering and processing of dye plants and also collect fallen firewood from renewable plantations, which is then used in fuel-efficient stoves in the dye house. Water usage has also been minimized; rainwater collection and solar heating are practiced.

BioDye works with local farmers to support the re-introduction of indigo in agriculturally depleted regions, thus contributing to sustainable livelihoods. The organic Eri silk threads are produced with a community-based silk project in Northern India and are Fair Trade certified. After dyeing, they are treated with a natural soy wax to ensure smooth stitching.

The hand-crocheted lace trims are made with a Fair Trade certified lace-making co-operative in Eastern India, which provides support to its members through education and health initiatives.
