Sustainable and tailored swim shorts.
Based in London, Riz launched in 2009 as a more sustainable and tailored approach to men’s swim shorts and board shorts.
A soulful yet sartorial bridge between the beach and the bar, the sea and the street. Inspired by the idea of Saville Row for surfing, Riz shorts have an ‘old school’ tailored feel and won’t go out of style over night. At the same time, the use of the latest recycled fabrics and digital print techniques means Riz shorts maintain a contemporary edge.
Riz works with a small collective of hand selected artists and illustrators to come up with prints that convey a own unique ‘British-Hawaiian style’. They incorporate themes of endangered fish, flowers and insects that Riz hope will foster awareness and inspire appreciation for the natural world.
Ethical Focus & Policy
Oceans are littered with plastics. In an effort to do their part, every pair of Riz shorts are crafted from 100% recycled and recyclable fabric (plastic bottles) as well as being digitally printed in the UK using earth friendly inks. Through the #bottlestoboardshorts project Riz is working towards developing a fabric containing bottles collected directly from beaches and rivers in the UK.
The pioneering Rizcycle scheme allows the customers to return their old shorts in return for a discount off their next pair; focusing customers on the entire product life-cycle and converting it into a perpetual 360 degree process.
Riz is based on 5 pillars:
FABRIC: Quick drying recycled and recyclable polyester; made from up-cycled plastic bottles with a suede finish with satin underside for comfort.
FIT: Inspired by a pair of tailored trousers the fit is elegant and cut to excel in and out of the sea.
PRINT: Unique prints designed by hand selected artists are digitally printed using earth friendly water based inks in the UK.
DETAIL: Accute attention to detail – understated, essential and refined. Whether pocket buttons from the sustainable tagua nut, to printed care labels for comfort.
PROVENANCE: The raw fabric is made from post-consumer plastic bottles. This recycled material comes from Taiwan. Then the fabric is digitally printed in Maclesfield UK. The shorts are then made in a small factory in Portugal.
Riz also works with a variety of ocean and environmental charities, donating a proportion of their profits or stock to support their work, organising beach clean ups and spreading the word about ocean pollution and endangered species.
