Contemporary accessories ethically produced in Kenya.
ZikoAfrika is a boutique contemporary brand inspired by the dual heritage of founding sisters Sisi and El. Established in 2013, each product is crafted in Kenya and reflects both European and African aesthetics for a modern take on traditional forms and materials.
With a focus on clean lines and minimalist design, ZikoAfrika reworks some of the most iconic pieces from the continent to create fashion forward, trend-neutral accessories.
Generating employment while promoting a positive image of the continent through high-end production is a central part of the brand ethos. In line with this, ZikoAfrika works with a number of ethically certified workshops and sources as many raw materials as possible from Kenya or the East African region.
Co-founder Sisi King was recently offered a place on the 2016 Acumen East African Fellows Program, a leadership course designed to connect businesses advocating for social change in the region.
As a brand ZikoAfrika are not willing to compromise on either ethics or aesthetics, and this belief will continue to inform all future plans and goals.
Ethical Focus & Policy
Fair production is central to the ZikoAfrika brand ethos working with producers to pay their employees a living wage.
They have spent over a year establishing relationships with workshops in Nairobi and Mombasa that provide valuable employment and training opportunities under strict Fairtrade guidelines.
ZikoAfrika regularly visit all workshops producing their products and are passionate about exploring new production methods that improve efficiency, standards and safety.
As board members of the Association of Fashion Designers of Kenya, they also work with the government, private sector and financial institutions to build a strong, fair, fashion industry in Kenya.
One of the primary barriers to larger scale, consistent production in Kenya is the lack of mechanised processes in artisanal workshops. ZikoAfrika advocate finished by hand items that are cut or moulded by modern machines, including lasers, then completed by hand.
This allows the workshops to produce with to complete orders quicker, reduce waste, cut down on rejection rates, improve safety and increase wages. Mechanisation in this context does not equate to a loss of jobs – it allows for wider socio-economic development and mobility.
20 to 40 year old, fashion forward and predominantly female consumers who are ethically conscious and have a global outlook.
