Stylish fair trade clothing supporting education programmes for kids in Tanzania.
Shika is more than a sustainable fashion label. It the result of a collaboration between hard working women from two countries in two continents – UK and Tanzania. At Shika, they believe that beautiful clothes should come from fair trade, not form fast fashion.
Shika seeks out beautiful African prints to use in small quantities making each garment limited edition. The seamstresses in Tanzania then transform the fabric using classical design silhouettes to produce wearable on trend pieces. Each garment is designed to be worn for life.
All the profits generated by the Shika collection support their educational programmes for poor and vulnerable children in Tanzania.
Ethical Focus & Policy
Shika promotes and generates trade opportunities between Tanzania and the rest of the world. They want their clothing to truly support African development. Shika provides full time employment to 4 disadvantaged women in the area of Sinone, Arusha. Operating as a fair trade producer group, all the women decide how they work and are paid a fair wage.
Although currently a very small producer, Shika plans to achieve WFTO accreditation. The company already works according to these principles. Emphasis is placed on reducing waste and recycling and reusing as much as they can. Also, most of the equipment used to produce their collection doesn’t run on power so they have a small carbon footprint.
In the future, Shika would like to expand and provide fair trade employment to more disadvantaged women and eventually build own workshop which would hold good green and sustainable credentials.
